Also, does anyone actually believe the 230-mpg hype concocted by GM? Succinctly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it all depends on how many miles you drive between plug-ins. Take your pick: mid 30s to more than 1200 mpg.
Hybrids of all varieties have proven to be efficient―and generally cost-effective―means of achieving better-than-traditional fuel consumption and cleaner-than-traditional emissions. EVs also have a place in our diverse-mobility future, just as diesel, compressed natural gas and hydrogen fuel cells will play roles as well.
Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and let’s not forget whether one buys into all this at $41K minus tax benefits.
But who really cares whether the car is A) a range-assisted EV; i.e., a series hybrid, its gasoline engine solely dedicated to driving its electric generator on demand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or B) a more familiar hybrid of the series/parallel variety, in which that engine occasionally drives a generator, occasionally propels the car―and as in A) occasionally shuts down completely.
The latest word from Chevrolet is that its Volt isn’t purely an EV with range-extender gasoline engine. Indeed, at high speed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its gasoline engine also contributes directly to the Volt’s progress―not unlike “conventional” hybrids such as the Toyota Prius. Alas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this disclosure comes after considerable posturing of GM for the past three years that the Volt was to be a paradigm shift and not just another hybrid.
The proof of the Chevy Volt’s concept shouldn’t be in its technical definition nor in mpg arithmetic. Rather, it will be in customer acceptance of its now reported “25 to 50 miles” EV range (note, not steadfastly 40 as hitherto often quoted) and how transparently the gasoline engine kicks in―either after that EV range is exhausted or in high-speed operation.
But who really cares?
Neither nitpicking about nomenclature―nor posturing with hype―is worth the trouble.
