Special Teams
Defense
(Florida) Until their game against Kentucky, Florida’s offense has been the punch line of the SEC. ?Ranked 90th in passing and 50th in rushing the ball the Gators looked, in a word, inept in their first three games. ?However, a spark was released against Kentucky, a spark that broke, throwback jerseys, of all things, a Tim Tebow record. ?Freshman Trey Burton, gave a Tim Tebow like performance against the Wildcats scoring six touchdowns in one game. ?The key to Florida’s offense will be how productive their game can be without Burton. ?Of Florida’s 19 touchdowns this season eight have come from Burton and two from the defense leaving the other nine to split between Brantley and a few running backs. ?If the offensive line can protect Brantley and the Florida offense can function in the passing game they could spell trouble for a slightly exposed and inexperienced secondary for Alabama.
Week Four: Arkansas vs. Alabama (picked-Bama, won-Bama)
It’s hard to draw coaching weaknesses from the staff of either team. ?Urban Meyer and Nick Saban have been two of the most consistent coaches throughout their careers and are also extremely good at game planning. ?So, as the coaches are near reflections of success we must look at the assistants. ?In that case Alabama has more continuity both on defense and offense than that of Florida, Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong have each gone onto new opportunities as head coaches and this staff has been together for less than two full years now.
Special Teams Edge: Florida
Week Two: South Carolina vs. Georgia (picked- USC, won-USC)
(Alabama) Trent Richardson, Julio Jones, Darius Hanks, Marquis Maze and Greg McElroy tore apart the first two opponents of the season without Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram. ?And guess what, he’s back! ?The Florida defense has performed well this season but they haven’t had to defend the whole field like they will have to against Nick Saban and crew. ?Stack the box and stop the run, okay, football jersey, then McElroy will just keep throwing the ball at a 70% completion rating clip. ?Defend the pass and blitz the quarterback, okay, then Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, and Freshman Eddie Lacy will tear you apart on the ground averaging?collectively eight yards a carry. ?Believe it or not the Crimson Tide might have the most dynamic offense in the SEC in 2010 and stopping them will be no easy task.
Week One: UNC vs. LSU (picked-UNC, won-LSU)
Week Three: Clemson vs. Auburn (picked-Auburn, won-Auburn)
If there ever was a way to start the season with an ugly 4-0 record Urban Meyer and the Gators have found it. Florida is hanging in the Top 10 not because they deserve it right now but because they started there and kept winning so the voters didn’t feel right dropping them down. ?However, Meyer and crew can right the ship this week and get Gator-Nation talking about another shot at a national title if they can upset the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa this weekend. ?
(Florida) As mentioned above Florida’s defense has already scored on two interception returns for touchdowns. ?Not only that but they are in the ranks of Nebraska, football jerseys, Alabama, and Texas in the way of turnovers through the first four games. ?Florida’s defense has had to be on their toes all season because of an?anemic?and mistake prone offense, especially with the center exchange with the quarterback, and they have done quite well. ?No team has scored more than 17 points on the Gators this season, but then again they haven’t faced a team with a winning record yet this year. ?That is until this weekend. ?Florida is adjusting under a new defensive coordinator but has shown definite growth and and an opportunistic mentality which is what they will need to have coming into this weekend’s contest.

(Alabama) Alabama is replacing 9 to 10 starters from a year ago depending on who you ask. ?The return of Marcell Dareus to the defensive line is key for a team that is among the worst in the nation in pressuring the quarterback. ?This week they go against a first year starter which doesn’t bode will for Florida. ?Nick Saban has tortured first year starters in his tenure as head coach, any one remember Ryan Mallett in 2009? ?Ouch. ?While this is a different defense they are no less talented, just less experienced. ?Some of that lack of experience showed up against Arkansas, especially in the first half.
Week Five: (7) Florida [4-0] @ (1) Alabama [4-0]
Here’s to Gator fans hoping that Jeffery Demps ankle is fine and his breakaway and game changing speed can be used on the kick return side of things to swing momentum this week. ?The loss of Javier Arenas hasn’t been easy to replace for the Tide but they have their own set of dynamic game changers ready to return kicks. ?Both teams punters and kickers are consistent and good. ?And in what could be a field position game (Florida hopes) these things are the most important.
Alabama is too experienced, too deep, and is too good at wreaking?havoc?on brand new starting quarterbacks especially in Tuscaloosa. ?Alabama wins by two scores in this one.
Coaching
It’s week five already and time for the SEC Game of the Week once again.
Alabama on the other hand opened the season with an iron fist and assertion that they would be the first BCS team to repeat as BCS champions. ?The Crimson Tide didn’t allow a touchdown until late in the second half of their third game against Duke, then again, their first two games were against San Jose State and a Penn State team with a Freshman quarterback. ?The Tide are expected to win this game, what remains to be seen is how dominant they may look in doing so.
Projected Winner: ‘Bama by 10
Offensive Edge: Crimson Tide
